I got this very worn moth in the trap overnight in Dodford.
Not too much to go on but anyone have any ideas? My best guess is possibly Map Winged Swift but I have never seen one and there are a LOT of scales missing!
Hi Peter, Sorry, should have thought. I have updated the post with a picture against a millimeter scale. It was more the size of Ghost moth (which was my initial thought on first sight) than Common Swift which I also had in the trap but were much much smaller.
So it's about 38-40mm wingspan. The paler band near the termen leans towards Map-winged but I'm not at all certain. If you are desperate to know and no-one else chips in with more confidence, I can always chop it for you.
Thanks Peter and Patrick. It is as I suspected, just a bit too worn! I just wanted to put it out there to get a second opinion.I'll keep my eyes peeled for a better specimen.
Hi Pete, what's the wingspan?

ReplyDeleteI agree, I would want to chop it to be certain.
