Crassa tinctella

Last Saturday night here at Warndon, Worcester I was not expecting much but put the garden Robbo on anyway - 'just in case'. Next morning only 10 species were identified. However one was totally unfamiliar to me and checking books and photos I was fairly happy it was Crassa tinctella. Considering there had not been one in Worcs since June 1885 I decided to have it checked by Patrick Clement and the result was a re-sounding 'positive male'. A postscript to this is that another was attracted to light in the Shropshire side of the Wyre Forest on Wednesday night by Patrick and so it appears the species is having a good year. A friend of mine caught another near Swindon in Wiltshire last night.

Buckenhill Wood May 21st 2020

The intention was to run a trap in the wood and another in the reversion field next to it, but there was a gang of young Herefords grazing and they'd grazed it down to not so much in the way of vegetation, so I ran two traps in the wood, not the best location for this time of year. The wood is opposite Siege Wood and I hope to trap there again later this year. Perfect start conditions, but after 2 hours the rain started and as the rainfall radar app was showing quite a lot about to arrive, I packed up early. As such, the list was a bit shorter than it maybe should have been, but mysef and equipment all stayed fairly dry. And compared to the trap in the garden, this was a quiet night out. Poplar Kitten probably the best record and maybe a Devon Carpet as well. It was just nice to get out again.. Peter Hall

Bringsty Common

Bringsty Common has been pretty good these past days. On the 19th I recorded exactly 60 species in the garden, running two Robinsons. The 20th similar with 57 species. I went off to trap at Buckenhill Wood on the 21st and took 2 Robinsons, which left me with one to run in the garden on that night. 82 species so far. Peter Hall

A valued porch

I had to move my actinic into the porch last night to avoid the rain but was rewarded by my first Lunar Thorn for a couple of years. The Waring/Townsend field guide states that these are 'now very scarce in the Midlands' so I suppose Herefordshire is near the edge of the range.
I also potted a Tortricid from the porch window a couple of days ago and have just looked at it and think it may be a Pammene germmana. The palps are out of focus in this pic but look noticably white.

The lure of Bringsty Common

On the advise of my friend Dave Wilton, I got the FOR lure out of the freezer, put it in a pheromone trap and took it down to the nearest dingle where there's quite a bit of sallow and willow and left it there for 3 hours. I'm pleased to say there was a single Red-tipped Clearwing in the trap when I went to fetch it back. Very few county records for this one. I'll write something about moth trap catches tomorrow Peter Hall
