Cloaked Pug

The Herefordshire species list has increased by one after I recorded this in the Mortimer Forest last night. Not surprising considering the mass on conifers here really. Thanks to Martin Townsend for confirming the moth. I was hoping for Silvery Arches, but no luck. Species totals will be around 100 by the time I get around to looking in some pots maybe tomorrow, so actually better than I anticipated. Peter Hall

Bringsty Hornets

My LUN Lunar Hornet lure has arrived so today I put it down the slope from my house into some Sallows around 10.15am and left it for the day. I think the 4 that were in the trap arrived fairly early as they all looked worse for wear when I went to retrieve the traps at around 6.30pm. Delighted the lure works and delighted I now have a record for the Common as well.. The only other clearwing was a Red-belted Clearwing this time to the MYO lure hung up in the same Sallows. Sphinx ligustri

Monday, 12th July 2020, Hampton Dene, Hereford
Skinner moth trap, 125w MV.
On opening the trap surprised to find a Privet Hawk-moth - Sphinx ligustri. Wings fully folded but a little gentle persuading convinced him to open more fully.

Bringsty Common June 30th

Ran 2 traps last night in the garden. Lists are getting quite long now, so I won't put all the species up. Catch totalled 69 species of macro and 36 species of micro (to date) with quite a few needing closer examination. Still very few Rustic moths. Scalloped Oak now appearing. My garden seems to host a good colony of Suspected moth and is just about the only place in the county where it has been recorded, which I find surprising. My first one of the year last night and also a fresh Angle-striped Sallow (earliest record by 12 days). Triple-spotted Clay still outnumber Double Square-spot. I'm pleased we are in July now because I've been recording July species for quite some days! Just because it is so nice, I've added a photo of a butterfly which flew into the house a few days back, much to my surprise Peter Hall
